I have wanted to share this with you since last week....so why not now?
At the Waldorf school they have a beautiful event for the incoming first graders. Note my first grader at the top who decided on the outfit, tie AND the hat.
The "Rose Ceremony" is a sweet way to mark this momentous occasion from kindergarten to first grade. A senior from the high school picks a first grader to be "buddies" with all year. They help them find their seats in their new classroom. They help them carve pumpkins for the Halloween journey and they mentor in many ways all year long.
On the first day, in an all school assembly, our first grader's name was called. He jumped off the big daddy's lap and walked calmly over to the senior. She gave him a rose and the two of them walked hand in hand down to meet his new first grade teacher.
Let me just say that all the parents are crying whether it's your child or not. The children look so small and yet so big all at the same time. It's hard to believe in that moment that they are no longer kindergartners but "BIG" children who now get to play on the "BIG" playground.
Then they find their seat amongst their classmates and the new teacher tells a story. A beautiful story that will follow along with their learning in the classroom. Then the teacher looks at the parents and announces, "Our new First Graders!"
The parents exchange looks and burst into tears again.
It's beautiful I tell you. And, that is just one biased opinion of this teary mama.
The continuation of this ceremony happens at the end of the year when the seniors are set to graduate. In another assembly the parents of the soon to be college children are the ones crying the hardest watching their little ones look so big and yet so small.
It's lovely. I realize in writing this how hard it is to describe the sweet faces of these children but I know those of you with little ones in your lives are sure to understand. It's a moment when your heart aches with happiness as well as sadness. All at the same time.
So, we have made it through two rose ceremonies with only two more to go....maybe next time I will remember the kleenex.
Happy Thursday to you all.
